Raising a subfloor issues?

I'm on a project where we replaced linolium in the kitchen with stone tile. We wanted to do the project right and went with 1 1/4 (3/4 T&G + 1/2 Ply screwed to the T&G avoiding the joists) 1/4 Hardi. With the thickness of the stone and mud, we are a good bit uneven with the projected hardwood flooring height. We are replacing the floor and subfloor throughout the rest of the level anyway and thought that adding more subfloor to the 3/4 T&G could help evening things out. So here is my question.

Should the top subfloor of the hardwood subfloor be "floating" (glued and screwed to the 3/4 but not the joists?

Any and all tips are appreciated.

Wes

Did you ever think about looking at reducind strips from Marble to wood. You can either make one yourself, or they have them for sale at professional flooring stores. There are ways to build up the wood floor, but it's much much more work than just using a reducing strip.
