Problem With Tile Contractor In Florida

We hired a contractor to do about 2400 SF of floor and wall tiling in our house that we bought recently.

Its taking them forever, and to make matters worse, the guy I hired is not even doing the work himself. He's paying some guy $150 per day to do the work.

They are just about finished the flooring in the house.

Now they need to do the walls (both Bathroom walls)

Thats all thats left.

But they first got to rip off the exisiting bathroom wall tiles in the showers and also rip off the wallpaper on the bathroom walls that are obviously not currently tiled.

I left him a nasty message and he said that I can hire another contractor to do the walls if I want to since I am paid up to this point for the flooring.

He admitted to taking on more work that he can handle thus not being able to complete my job in a timely manner.

He still got to put the toilets back in, replace a few floor tiles that are sitting higher then the surrounding tiles...he still needs to put all the doors back on the hinges in the house...basically lots of odds and ends...

However, if I hire another contractor now to do the bathroom walls, then probably I shouldn't have the original contractor put the doors back on until this new guy is done...

Any thoughts, ideas or experiences with contractors?

P.S. I live in Florida...

Do you have a contract? What was your original agreement on time frame? Did you try communicating in a normal, respectful manner or did you just leave a nasty message first? Whats the quality of the work like? Maybe that is more important to your contractor than speed (if so you should be damn thankful, cause the other way around would be far worse I assure you)

Sorry but there are way to many variables here for me to just jump on the bandwagon of contractor bashing with you. It is my experience that direct, cordial communication can solve 95% of client-contractor problems. This is a two sided street, by the way.

You seem to be quick to look for others to support you on making him out to be the bad guy when we don't know the whole story.
