Prices For Install?...Anyone?

Guys, I have a 1200 sq. foot home in need of some flooring. Its on a cement slab with carpet and the padding was glued down.. First of all, how do I get all that glue off the floor. And also, how much do i charge for putting in basic tile for all the square footage, how much for laminent flooring (Pergo, etc.) . Thanks

Easiest way to get the glue off is with a floor machine (buffer) with a sanding pad. Rent one at big Orange. Or you can do it manually with floor scrapers. Or chemically with strippers designed for it.

As far as what to charge....there are ALOT of variables that only you know, such as your operating costs and needed level of profit. Is the base up? What about floor prep other than the adhesive removal? Are you supplying anything like thinset, grout, underlayment, etc., etc.? A starting point for base rate (imo) would be about $3-4/ft for tile and $2-3 for laminate.

Lol ... I knew that was coming ... Precision is on point ... to many things that can change a price range ... for example tile might go for $2-3/ft in texas and $6-7/ft in washington ... my area it's $3-5/ft and lam is $1-3/ft.

I always hand scrape the glue residue off ... but Precision has a point that the Home Didiots rent out the buffers and sell the stripper (chem)

Quick way to find out is to ask HD what they charge for the install and take about a $1/ft off and that is on average what the small contractors charge.

Heck around here I charge right at their rates (HD) or even a little more sometimes. Their reputation for installations and measures is not the greatest so I use it to my advantage. "If __________(fill in the blank) charges X and they use hacks and are not reliable then surely my rates are a better value for the job you will recieve...here are my references." Close. HOLD ON GUYS..........

If ceramic or stone tile is the intended new flooring then the use of any chemical adhesive remover would be taboo. NO CHEMICALS are to be used to remove prior adhesives if thinset products are to be used afterwards to install new tile.

The existing adhesive must be mechanically removed, either by scraping or blasting with aggregate. In most cases the old adhesive can easily be hand-scraped and then a modified thinset suitable for use over adhesive residue can be used.

People get too lazy and don't want to scrape and grind anymore.

Re: Prices For Install?...Anyone?

what is a typcial rate for (12"x12") slate? Is it more difficult than similarly sized ceramic tile? I ran across one installer putting it down for
$5/sqft in Delaware.

Re: Prices For Install?...Anyone?

May be I should start a new thread, but this one is close to my question.

The entrance of this building has outdoor carpet, Glued down.
The floor scrubber sounded easy enough, I've heard about a floor grinder. I'm not concerned about dust or noise.
Which would be faster?

hey 72 chevy 5.00 aft for slate is low I think I was getting 10.00-15.00 a ft in Calif here in Elko NV I still get 8.00-10.00 a foot it is real easy to work with I love it its real soft and a lot of fun to do you have to lay it all out first take a broom and soap and wash it first get all the mud off it then let it dry and then DONT forget to seal it first befor you lay it or you will have one hell of a mess when go to grout it it will get in all the uneven layers of the slate and you be on your hands knees for ever cleaning it jasco makes a real good product its called clear seal after you have clean -sealed - layed the tile then use the jasco clear seal on it what a shine it will look like its wet all the colores will shine dont forget to mix them up you might have to oppen up 5-7 boxes and pick out the tiles so they dont look the same
