Question

Price For A Wood Floor Cut In..

I have a customer who wants a glue down hardwood floor with diamonds cut into it with another wood. I have done this type of work with tile but never with wood. I was wondering if anyone has done this and what they charged for this.

That is what I do. Depends on what the customer can afford. No, seriously, that is how I price my work. My labor rate is...........more then 30 less then 100 an hour. I'll leave it at that. That is for the inlay, medallion, mosiac labor work ONLY.

Be careful with your bid.
If your talking about a pre-finished product, it is very labor intensive.
You want to use a router to cut out the diamonds.
If you lay the floor solid and then cut out the shapes, just pulling out the flooring will take you some time.

Re: Price For A Wood Floor Cut In..

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but:

I was cruising through the flooring section as I have approx 1,200 ft of 2 1/4 oak and a kitchen and bath to do in tile. I layed probably 4,000 sq ft hardwood last year, but mostly new construction, so I'm trying to pick up a few "tricks" in the hardwoods. First time laying tile, but have "help" in a friend that does quite a lot of it. I mean "how hard can it be"......Like that statement hasn't gotten my azz in a jam before.

Question on the last post on the diamonds....why would you lay the floor and then cut out the diamond instead of possibly drawing the diamond on the floor and cutting "to" it allowing you to make your own T&G to lock it in?

And please pardon me for resurrecting any other older threads that I may find interesting...just in case

Personally I think it would be easier to keep the desired shape or pattern to be "cut in" square with the rest of the floor if it was cut in after the fact. Maybe I'm wrong..it has happened.

Re: Price For A Wood Floor Cut In..

I once worked in an old abandoned house probably mid 1800's. Every floor in the house was done in a different pattern with a different wood. Two of the rooms were across from each other with bay windows. In the recess there were 5, 5 pointed stars inlaid in the floor in a walnut while the flooring around was in oak, one room in red ad the other in white.....beatiful work. Had checker boards around the outside the room also done in oak and walnut.

That was 20 years ago and I thought then about how time consuming it must have been....Now I'm workin for myself and it almost boggles the mind.

OP never really got an answer...not that he really deserved one, but what other kinds of pattern has anyone else done? The house I'm doing is for my cousin. It will all be on a cost plus and may have some flexability as far as what I do. Would like to do something interesting, rather than plain jane red oak. Hate to drag it to her garage, but have a Delta unisaw that would make it alot easier.

Put a Medallion / Compass in the entryway

Hallways, entryway, maybe a nice inlaid border of a different species to pop (Time wise though it can add up)

As for the other rooms, most details would be hidden by furniture or rugs - so unless they want something special, I would just go with normal flooring - no deco

Okay, just what the fruck is your question? How to cut an inlay or how to make it interesting or what to use? I use different woods when I do a room (borders one type, centeral medalion another). I then lay somne premade strips and blocks throughout the room. Usually these are hidden by rugs and furniture when the room is furnished but the overall effect is what you are after.

Some people seem to get a high or some other enjoyment from discovering the little 'extras' found in a room after they first view it.

Simmer down....roll out a little early this morning Yeah that was what I was asking......not that he really deserved one, but what other kinds of pattern has anyone else done? I guess ideas

That pattern looked pretty cool, I like it. Looking to make the rooms interesting, or different looking. I can figure out the how, and how long. I'll be picking up the flooring this week to get it acclimating. Doing it it red oak so I'll probably pick up a box of walnut to throw something in

Actually, I got up 3 hours late. Maybe why I was grumpy. Anyho, you name it, we do it. Just about every conceivable design imagined. If they can draw it, we can put it in a floor. I'll post some 'ideas' later when I find a comptuer with the correct links on them.

As for the reason you cut out the inlay, you lay the entire original floor and then cut out the 'extras' because, could you imagine trying to butt everything up to the little designs you are going to embed in the original floor? You ends won't be as flush as you would like. Trust me, I tried it that way and had to use a lot of filler to make it look good. Now imagine trying to do that with any curved parts. You can imagine the nightmare that would cause.

Re: Price For A Wood Floor Cut In..

I like the border and the center piece that you posted... I think some variation of those together would look good....we'll have to see if she bites. I had her talked into unfinished and then finishing herself and that would have made things a lot easier (she is pretty handy). I introduced her to the owner of the supply house and he turned her onto the pre finished with the warranty. Not sure about working in that little v-groove in there. Some of those patterns would be ridiculously time consuming, not sure how she would feel about me camping out i her living room for a year.

Re: Price For A Wood Floor Cut In..

Still not convinced with the cutting out the in lay, I'll have to give it a try. I think I'm better with a scribe, band saw and stationary sander than I am with a router. Any curved part edges can be transfered right to the next piece. I can plane down and make up tounge material before even starting......I have no problem dragging half the shop to the job site. I will be there for awhile. Possibly the rest of the winter. Now she's talking about moving doors and such. I originally figured to be there 2 weeks and this will be the last of my inside work for the winter. I like being warm and dry.

I'm getting ready to purchase 1000 sqft of rosewood to utilize here and there. Most likely save some for our home. A mid room border or some such. Should be fun.
