Outdoor Tile Install


i have a client who wants to install tile on a second story deck and to use that tile to act as a roof for area underneath the deck. they want to build an additional room under the deck. anyone have any thoughts on the best type of underlayment to use to seal the deck before i install the tile backer board??

Don't use backerboard. Make sure your floor's Deflection is good and stiffen it up with thick plywood. Then use Schluters Ditra with Kerdi Band to make it a waterproof installation.

You need to provide more information to calculate the deflection. How big is the deck, joist size, Joist length, how far between joist supports and type of joists. My guess is being a deck it will need better support. The maxium deflection for ceramic tile is L/360. A typical deck would not meet the deflection requirements. Most decks in my area are 2x8 joists on 24" centers. With 10' between supports thats only L/320 deflection.

I agree, use Ditra, then walls and a roof.
