Oak Floor Question

Is it difficult to refinish a hardwood floor from a dark color to a lighter color?

Re: Oak Floor Question

Assuming that the floor has enough surface thickness to sand off the existing stain......the answer is no. It is not difficult to go from darker to lighter.

What type of floor is it?

Re: Oak Floor Question

It's oak, 3/4" thick, never sanded before, a medium color, and want to go with a natural maple kinda shade.

Re: Oak Floor Question

Shouldn't be a problem. Are you doing it yourself? If you are, we'll see you in a few months when it's done .

Honestly, although I will never ever do a floor again, I can't see it being a problem to take the finish down. Oak doesn't really suck stain very deeply, so you shouldn't have to take much off.

Re: Oak Floor Question

Sometimes some of the dark stain may show slightly on the butt ends of the flooring and in any seams or nail holes that may have been filled with dark filler.

If the seams between the boards/planks and butt ends are tight, then there will be no problem, you will probably not see any remaining stain.

Re: Oak Floor Question

You can also bleach to lighten.
