need recommendations for dark floor stain
I am looking for a brand and color for a dark, rich black/brown floor stain with a touch of red mahogany... you see it at Pottery Barn. Can anyone recommend a good brand and stain name within that brand? Do you make it up yourself by combining stains?

MinWax produces nothing I would use on a floor. If you've had good luck with it, please let us in on the secret,
Bona Dri-Fast stains are much better imo.

then again, i have used minwax for small repairs, and i am not sure why it would not work for a floor, provided you used a good quality finish. what is it about minwax that would cause it not to perform well on a floor? here is there site, they list floors as an acceptable application.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with using Minwax stains on a floor. I've been doing it for years and it totally fine. Ive also used Dura Seal and Sherwin Williams. I have only heard good things about Bona Fast dry stains... unfortuntately I can't get them at my distributor. Try dark walnut and red mahogany.
Over what species of wood was the most important question that is still unanswered.. My answer was asssuming it was red/white oak.
