Nailing Of Prefinished Flooring

Hello all,

I will be installing a 3/4" prefinished hardwood flooring for a customer in a small bedroom, less than 180 sq ft. I don't own a floor stapler and was wondering if I could get a quality job by using 16 gauge, 2" nails through the tongue spaced about every 4". What are your thoughts?

Can I get a four?

The stapler will snug everything nice and tight. It is also faster.

Ok, what am I doing here? As a plumber I'm not sure why I'm in flooring but don't those staplers rent for around $30 - $50? Why would you even consider any other way? Do people actually hand drive nails into hw flooring?

Make that "six". I could lend you mine but it would cost you more in time/gas than the actual rental...

Re: Nailing Of Prefinished Flooring

I was doing a Marmoleum install in a home and watched the carpenter install about 400 ft of 4 inch pine with a finish nailer.

I went back a year later to do another area and you could lose a small farm animal in the gaps in that pine floor. It was buckling in areas as well

Hand nail !!! I'm not that cold up here in the North. I was going to use my pneumatic finish nailer but obviously not a good idea. I had someone suggest it would be ok because of the small area but after hearing from so many negative resonses I will rent or maybe even consider buying one. Thanks again to everyone for their opimion.

Re: Nailing Of Prefinished Flooring

A regular finish nailer won't snug the board up against the previous one like a floor nailer/stapler will. That's the most important part of the process, getting the boards tight. That and gapping the long ends from the wall to allow for expansion.

Re: Nailing Of Prefinished Flooring

if you must hand nail <i don't know why you would want to> I think they use cut nails or something like them to do it, might want to predrill. cut some wedges for forceing the boards into place. and lots and lots of beer.
