Membrane or lead pan?

Is there a rule of thumb for using a lead pan or a membrane under tile in a shower stall?

Lead pans shouldn't be used AT ALL. Not because the lead is a bad material (although it is-- corrodes too easily), but rather the fact that it's not sloped. With the Chloroloy, you can pitch it with a mortared preslope underneath the membrane, whereas you can't do that with lead or copper.
