Measure And Cut Oddly Shaped Hexagon Subfloorig

Ripped out a lead pan shower today only to find 4Ē red oak hardwood flooring below.

I need to cut the oak and possibly the subfloor below out to replace the plumbing.

How do I measure those angles? What tool should I get?

Or do you put a piece of cardboard in there and trim until you get the best shape possible. Then use the cardboard as a template?

Also will a 4 x 6 sheet of plywood be adequate to fill that space? I canít get a 4x 8 into the elevator.

You can make a template by taping poster board together. Don't skimp on the tape.

Or put a piece down and use it as a template for a rectangular cut.

Use drywall shim and glue gun to make the template.

Drywall shim glued together to make templates, one of the tops from template.

As his (I assume it's a he) name implies--he's still a rookie. Hasn't learned the wayward ways yet.

Counter tops. The time frame did not allow for the cabinets to be set, then templated. The GC knew he was responsible if the tops did not fit.

The tops all fit with very minor tweaking.

Re: Measure And Cut Oddly Shaped Hexagon Subfloorig

I created a template using wax paper. Doubt itíll hold when I move it. But it took literally 5 minutes.

Iím gonna pick up some drywall shims tomorrow and create a template. Local Home Depot and Loweís doesnít carry them. Maybe a lumber yard.

Iíll use a staple gun to secure them.

Great idea!

Re: Measure And Cut Oddly Shaped Hexagon Subfloorig

That's what I figured Tom, but wasn't sure.

rookieplumber,

I don't think you know what you are doing and when I tried to find your 'help me' subject on where you f/u the shower that was moved, I looked into your posting history to find it and all of your posts were "how do I?" posts on bathroom remodeling.

Have all these been for relatives/girlfriends or were they for others?
Who is this one for? Are you an apprentice? What year? Was a permit pulled? Why isn't someone else doing the carpentry?

Forgive me but there is a lot of fraud in the trades, both on people that try to pass as 'contractors' and people that are homeowners/businesses that defraud legitimate contractors, so speaking for myself, I can be a bit jaded.

Don't waste to much time on this. Rip some 1/4" plywood to a few inches and make your template. Why staple? Hot glue works so well. No reason to reinvent things that work so well.

An added bonus to a sold impolite. You will know if you can get it in and out.

If you can't. Template again. This time two pieces.

Hot glue gun, don't use staples, you'll only screw yourself.

Wherever you get the shim should have a decent glue gun.

I'm to lazy for that.

The drywall shims cut with scissors, you can fold them on themselves to square ends, cut little pieces glue them on full pieces to follow curves and wall irregularities...

Re: Measure And Cut Oddly Shaped Hexagon Subfloorig

No reason for him to template anything. This is really simple stuff, really.

Anywho...to the bigger he could make far more money in his primary trade--hvac--than he could asking for help for his girlfriend's tile wall that he didn't even read the directions for as he tiled it and wasn't level or plumb or someone's shower he did where the glass didn't line up due to the curb and wall or a vent he couldn't figure out for his...IIRC his cousin or something.. Don't know whose medicine chest he screwed up or bathroom vent he couldn't figure out how to put a fan into.....

he just needs to just stay away from all these bathroom remodels for his friends and relatives as he clearly doesn't know what he's doing and.....just do his listed trade...HVAC.

20 years ago in Denver you could make 60K/year and they'd pay your expenses to move you out there. HVAC are dying for people. He's wasting his time.

Tom, you template your work? Who built that ****?

Those templates will go to a granite fabricator. They're to busy to get to the templating before Thanksgiving.

Built which/what?

Krok - These projects are for my own home - not for clients. I am not getting paid to learn on the fly - I just donít have the money to renovate my home. While I donít have the extra money laying around I do have time and I intend to use it productively.
