An expansion gap is left around the perimeter for the laminate to expand. In a basement setting and the known higher humidity levels in the basement, it is common for the laminate to swell and take up that expansion space. That is whayt it is there for. Now if you cut it back and you are going into the lower humidity season, the laminate is going to shrink, and the baseboards might not cover the shrunken laminate leaving a gap to be seen at the baseboards.

If the floor is not buckling or making noises from compression, there is no claim. If it is, then cut it back flush with the sheetrock or a little farther, replace the baseboards and be done with it with a signature the corrections were performed as requested.
I contacted the customer. Explained it to him exactly as you said to. I gave him the option. I told him that if he still wants us to come cut his floor back that we will but that he will be signing off on it as we will be doing it against our professional opinion and that of others in the industry. He is unsure now and says that he will get back to me if he wants us to do so. There is not compression noises and no buckling and we know that as we have personally been there recently to look at this with him. Thanks a ton for your expertise.

Rock is soooooooooooo much easier and faster to cut. Way way safer also you cant screwup the flooring and give him something else to bitch at
Yep, you are right. We have discussed that very recently, my husband is a journeyman carpenter and he said that that is exactly what he would do if it comes to that and if the places he is talking about actually touch the sheetrock.

Glad I could be of help. We all learn from others, and the road of hard knocks. If I can keep someone from going down the wrong road, I will be the first to speak up. I may be blunt and to the point, making some hate me, but I just tell it like it is.

Re: Laminate Flooring Issue With Customer

Someone said the customer is always right......
that may be true in cirsuit sity, but not in contracting..

customer service is invaluable and is probably the number one homeowner complaint against contractors, but the fact remains, they are NOT always right..
Thanks to the internet, you have alot of self procalimed know it alls now, but having some knowledge of the work to be performed is a good thing and is you are a pro, there is nothing to be concerend of.

Bottomline, some customers need to be told to go scratch their ass.

Lastly, if a customer supplies materials, you must still warranty your labor..But if there is a material deficiency, see above statement.

You must also make it known that they will be billed added charegs if there is deficiency in the material resulting in lost time or work as a result..

I learned this long ago , when I had 2 jobs we had to leave because of the materilas and being Mr Nice guy, left the job with no dough.

I would defintiely tell this guy you will be back one last time , to have his punch list ready as there will be no return trips and the visit will happen when you have the time..
