Laminate Flooring Around Metal Door Bucks ?

Looked at a job today. Its a small machine shop factory with offices up front.

The existing floor is 5/8 engineered about 12 - 15 years old. It is beat up pretty good as expected. Its caulked around the bucks.

The owner wants to go with laminate over the eng floor. I can do it....yes.

What if any suggestions for around the door bucks ??

Unlike eng floor, Lam is spongy - so any advice around the door bucks ? There has to be some installs around with this challenge.

Further, there's existing cove base. Its 5 offices and a common hallway. I told them I believe BB and shoe would be needed. However I'm tempted to quote going back with cove base. I believe I can cover the gap as cove will go about 9/16 off the wall. I'll have to cut the lam a bit closer than usual.

The budget is pretty tight as he said cheap, cheap - a few times for the flooring.....Understandably - its a machine shop. I'm adding an addl office too in the plant. Its all for the ladies up front.

So what about cove base on the lam and doing around the door bucks ??

Thanks for this input.

If it's engineered is it refinishable? That would save some money...

Personally I would attempt to steer them toward an Lvt product instead. It's thinner, better suited for the type of traffic they will see, and well stand up to the moisture a commercial cleaning crew will no doubt put on the floor. Laminate has it's place but imho a machine shop ain't one of them.

We recently did a commercial space like this. We just cut as close as we could to the door jambs and found a caulk that was almost an exact match to the dark gray jambs. It turned out looking really good.

Don't do that as you could cause a fire, theres wood behind there. Plus, some building codes to not allow you do cut them. I'd leave a gap, stuff with cork or some silicone that does not set hard. Some hard set caulk can stop expansion and lock in the floor.

Heck it is a machine shop, just leave a gap....

Re: Laminate Flooring Around Metal Door Bucks ?

how about the vinyl plank looking flooring. I would be nervous of the laminate 'floating' from one side to the other. That is, if you have a 1/4" gap on each side of the hall, what's to stop it from pushing all the way to one side and leaving a 1/2" gap-all it takes is enough sideways pressure, say from guys horsing around in the halls. The vinyl planking would be glued down=no movement and not as noisy as the laminate.

Re: Laminate Flooring Around Metal Door Bucks ?

Thanks for the replies fellas. The lam cut away from the jambs would be ok with them I'm sure. Not for me really...? A comm vinyl product would have been better but they wanted wood. I didn't have time to source the best alternatives.

Wasn't a good fit so I let it go. Not a referral but a lead from an ad.

Re: Laminate Flooring Around Metal Door Bucks ?

Sounds like a pretty simple job. I would just run the floating floor directly on top of the existing floor (provided no structural or water damage) throw some 6mil poly down and haul ballz. As far a movement thats not a concern(72chevy4x4)usually this would only apply to stairs. When cutting around door give the wood a back bevel to allow the face fit closer to jam. Them just cut tight and show those skills
