Installing Hardwood Over Tongue And Groove Subfloor

I'm getting ready to install solid 3/4 oak and I was wondering if anyone can tell me if it is advisable to install it right on top of the tongue and groove hardwood subfloor that is on top of the floor joists. I cut out the particleboard that was installed over it to raise the carpet level with the other floors and I discovered the tongue and groove. It has about a 1/3 inch gap between the boards for some reason but the tongue goes into the groove. I plan on laying paper down but any other suggestions or words of caution would be appreciated.

I'd do it, but its not a bad idea to put some plywood down first. Is this a project for you, or a home owner? I don't think it would be a problem if the budget doesn't allow for the plywood. Just make sure to strike lines for the joists and nail on top of them to try to tie into them.

I would renail the subfloor to the joists and staple down a layer of 5mm luann plywood, glued if possible, then rosin paper, finally flooring. I think you may get movement in the old T&G decking.

As long as you go the opposite direction, or at a 45º, there shouldn't be a concern. It get hairy, when you try to go the same direction as the planks.
