how would you like it?

I'm bidding out a job where the HO wants a particular floor installer to do the installation of the 3/4" hardwood flooring. I would like to do all of 'my thing'-the messy stuff-including installing the base then hand over the finished product to the flooring guy and he'll be the last one in on the project.

As a hardwood flooring installer, do you prefer (for best flooring results) the base be spaced off the floor and install your flooring under the floor (up to the last course) or cut your flooring short and leave a gap between the flush mounted base and flooring.

I would prefer the first method-second would provide a shorter base. If spacing the base off the subfloor-is 7/8" appropriate? This would be the method I've always done in the past...but haven't had the pro's feedback

I never thought it was a personal preference, but I will always put the baseboard on after the flooring goes in. I absolutely abhor the look of shoe moulding. It's clean and simple. To me, putting the baseboard before the flooring is like putting the cart before the horse. They do it a lot in production houses because it's fast and there's less chance of messing up the floor. Makes it easier to tuck the flooring in around the doorways and openings too.

Just hold off on the base boards where the hardwood will go...Any other way is just ass backwards...not that it can't be done..

Baseboard after the floor. Gotta' look pretty.
