Hardwood Inlay
I will be installing a 3/4" wideplank (5 1/4") ash floor and the client wants a Black Walnut inlay in the shape of a rectangle in the middle of the floor. I have installed hardwood before, but not with an inlay. The center of the inlay will be the Ash flooring, with a 2 1/4" wide walnut inlay about 5 feet wide by 8 feet long. How do you fit a 2 1/4 inch piece of wood in among all the 5 1/4" planks? Will I have to cut the tongue or the groove edge of the long boards that but up against the inlay? Thanks

Re: Hardwood Inlay
I'd lay the first long section of border up to the inlay. I'd biscut the inlay to the border and lay all the inlay except the last piece. I'd work my way with biscuts up each side of the inlay then cut the last inlay to match the joint of the border. Biscut the next border piece to the inlay, shoot to the wall, and go have a beer.
Use gravy (glue) with those biscuts. Bob

Re: Hardwood Inlay
Instead of using bisquits how about top nailing?

Re: Hardwood Inlay
Slot cutter and spline is the easiest and fastest way to do it imho, but a biscuit cutter will work too.

Re: Hardwood Inlay
You can also just lay your main floor and then cut in your inlay with a circular saw or plunge router. If the customer wants a special inlay, make sure he provides you with a detailed design to follow and make sure he signs off on it.
