Hardwood floor on concrete basement?

An installer told me that he can put a hardwood floor on a concrete basement by 1) putting a layer of 6 mil poly, 2) laying flat down 1x or 2x sleepers 12" o.c. and around perimeter, 3) then laying floor.

He also told me the concrete needs to have cured for at least 60 days before doing this.

Will this work?

Solid hardwood flooring should never be installed below grade...sleepers or not. At the very minimum you could be trapping mold and mildew under the plastic. Hardwood will out last your home if you install it right the first time.

It's easier to buy an engineered wood and float it.

A floating subfloor or stringer system is accepable. NWFA does have guidelines for this, and many people have done this succesfully. The big thing is making sure the concrete has an acceptable mositure level. I also have sealed the concrete in the past and then have used the 6 mil plastic.

Most people stay away from this because of 2 reasons. They hear 3/4 unfinsished shold not be put below grade, and it will not last, or they find out how much the price is and decide to go with something cheeper.

If you want to go for it, seal the concrete with at least 2 coats and pray for the best.

Another option is to go to solid wood and just accept the 'tavern floor'. A little uneven but has worked for hundreds of years.

Delta-FL on the floor, laminate padding and the laminate.

Delta-Fl is a blast to work with, and is water and vapor proof.
