Granite Tile Countertops Over Laminate
I was told to post this in the tile section so here goes:Need some advice on installing granite tiles over laminate existing counter. I will use wood trim to cap it all in but my question is can you go over laminate, if you rough it first?
Saw on a "flip" show once where they set the circular saw shallow and just scored it before laying a tile counter top. Will this work? Looking for a way not to have to cut new template. thanks |

Re: Granite Tile Countertops Over Laminate
DO NOT install CBU over laminate, rebuild it.
Once you screw down backerboard you will crack the laminate, cause voids and expose possible particle board underlayment which will swell once exposed.

Re: Granite Tile Countertops Over Laminate
It is very easy to remove formica. All you need is good torch, macheti 18" or longer (counters are usually 24") and utility knife.
First you heat up formica, hold a torch till formica gets hot on touch, but do not allow it to burn; it may start cracking and shooting. Then run utility knife along the edge of table to separate formica from table top and then insert your big 18" friend and start sort of cutting: if you pick up the edge of formica you can see the strings of glue and then all you do is to slice them untill you can remove it off the table. In case it brakes, a scraper with 4" blade or bigger can be handy too. |

Re: Granite Tile Countertops Over Laminate
yes, removing the countertop should be easy with ascetone.
installing over lam can be risky if there is future seperation, or current seperation of the lam from the counter.
