Question General flooring issues

Just a Sparky here, but re-doing an old house of my own and encountered some flooring issues; so thought I'd drop a note here and get some feedback.

1. I am installing Pergo laminate flooring in about half the house. Wondering if anyone that has experience with this brand has had any problems with it.

2. Just had two bedrooms refinished. They had 1 1/4 inch oak hardwood. Hired a flooring outfit for that because I wanted a top notch outcome. The boss came by, I was encouraged by his apparent knowledge, estimate was around $1000. I gave him the go ahead, when can you start. Got a call the following day, price "a little more" because of xyz, now $1300. Hmm, ok, no problem go ahead.

His worker showed up, began the process, he seemed rushed and a little sloppy, but everything "looked" to be going ok. Fine.

After the sanding and staining and first coat of poly was on, I was able to get a close look at the floor. Stain was unevenly applied, sanding swirls visible, and finish coat was not smooth. Pointed out that was NOT what I was expecting. Boss came by, looked it over, nodded and agreed, NOT what it ought to be.

So, worker returned and resanded the floor down to bare wood, re-applied all. Stain now looked great, nice and even color, very few sloppy parts. But surface still not smooth. It was glossy, but I can still see and feel the texture of the wood through the topcoat. I was expecting a glassy surface, perfectly smooth. I think the floor either wasn't sanded smoothly enough prior to applying the stain and finish, or not enough poly has been applied to fill all the little voids.

QUESTION: I don't want to be one of those "problem customers." Are my expectations here out of line? If you floor guys tell me that the top coat isn't supposed to be smooth over the entire surface, the I will just shut up and live with it.

Might help to point out that the worker managed to:
a. get dark smudged hand prints at about waist height all around the room on the freshly painted custom color.
b. completely coat the entire house with a layer of red dust
c. use duct tape rather than masking tape to put plastic over the doorway openings, which pulled the paint off the walls when removed.
d. used my shop vac attachments and made off with one of them when he left.
e. splattered stain on the walls and return air grate in the hallway.
f. skinned the face of one kithen cabinet with his equipment. (this was NOT one of the rooms being refinished.)
g. Stepped in a glob of filler putty, and tracked it in the master bathroom, leaving gooey footprints on the vynil.
h. Left several hairs and bristles in the finish coat of both rooms.
i. washed his tools out in my bathroom sink (I have both a laundry tub, and an outside hose than were at his disposal.) and splattered stain droplets on the mirror, vanity, walls and floor. Made NO effort to clean it up. Don't think he even noticed it.

I just don't feel I got my money's worth here. $1300 for two 12 x 12 rooms ( no baseboards or shoe moulding involved) and the endstate product is far less than what I was looking for.

So, should I take this up with the boss, or just pay the bill and shut up about it?

Sorry for being so long winded, but wanted to give enough info for a proper response. Thanks.

WOW!

I tell all my helpers that there are two parts to a job, the job itself and leaving the house cleaner than we find it. A-I is incredible to me and incredible you didn't tear his head off before he left.

I don't think it would be out of line to withold the final payment until A-I are fixed as if they had never been there before.

Wow, $4.50 a sq/ft and they didn't do a good job the first time.

Anyways, it sounds like an educated hack. How many coats of poly are on the floor? That might be the reason its not smooth, or they just didn't vac. Everything else they did is just not professional. Except for the red dust. That is a side effect of sanding, unless you go w/ someone who has a dust containment system.

Anyways, someone did not do a good job. Keep calling and get it right.

Oh and I just realized your in Eastern NC. If you don't mind, drop the company name, I might know who it is. And if you do end up having a hard time, just get in touch w/ me. I'll be glad to right a wrong.
