Gaps Around Doors

The previous contractor did a horrible job. I have been cleaning up poorly installed trim and unfinished paint. The one thing I have been trying to find a solution for is these gaps around the door in the flooring. The home owner does not have any scrap flooring and needs an inexpensive solution. Any help would be appreciated.

Got a closet you can pull material out of?
Then put a piece of carpet in the closet.

Re: Gaps Around Doors

Another option is to use a combination of a skil saw set to the flooring depth and a multi-tool to cut out a rectangle of flooring in each door jam, then lay in a different threshold into each door way. A complimentary piece of tile, marble, etc.

Not sure where in the house or how many doors you have, so that's a factor I guess.

Re: Gaps Around Doors

You can also cut the door stop trim up a bit, then put in a piece of shoe moulding on each side of the door jam to cover the gaps.

Bid it only if you want it. We're not obliged to take on every knucklehead problem that customers create for themselves....who then want an inexpensive fix.

That being said, drop some hardwood blocks in there, but it's a headache.

That color should be a pretty easy match... it's going to cost her either a box of flooring to do it proper or you putzing around trying to make fix-its work while paying you extra labor to do so...

The former is the easiest for you... takes less time, easier to do, and she'll end up saving on labor and not having to buy other materials to retro-fit...

Re: Gaps Around Doors

Just get a piece of hardwood flooring, straighten out the gap and fill it in, and use color matching stain, or get a prefinished piece of flooring it looks like natural oak.
A while back did this repair in 12 units on one tract home development, they did the same thing (but it was inside the closet) and you could hardly tell. Got natural pre-finished pieces of flooring from HD.

Thanks, we got it fixed. My client is a member at my church and got taken buy a shady contractor. Come to find out no permits were ever pulled. Couple other guys have come out to help. None of the 3way switches were working and most of the wiring was not to code.

Re: Gaps Around Doors

Glad you got the solution figured out. Was going to suggest either a closet or dishwasher if you couldn't find the flooring. Otherwise it's best to get another box. She's lucky to have good people looking out for her.

Re: Gaps Around Doors

I hate to say it, seen this a few times, and had to "fix" it the best you can. BUT sometimes ya get what ya pay for, the "cheap" way out will get ya in the end!
