Freshin Up Some Hardwood??

Hey guys, One of my customers was asking me what she could do to freshin up her oak hardwood floor. It is only one 12'x16' room, the hardwood had carpet on it that she pulled up. The hardwood is in pretty good shape just a little faded. What do you think I should recomend she do? Maybe a light sand then a little poly or maybe some kind of wax or something?

Thanks, Dave

Go to your local department store and buy some neutral KIWI shoe polish. Take a cloth diaper and soak it in warm water. Wring out the excessive water. Daub the diaper in the wax and start buffing it onto the floor. It'll look like a sheet of glass when you're done.

22 cans of wax will suffice.

If the existing finish is poly, then a screen and coat

No wax, murphy's, orangeglo, or any other temporary freshener should be used. Who ever said screen/coat has the right idea.

If you put some wax or orangeglo crap a future recoat without sanding becomes a PITA as those products tamper the bonding ability between coats- no matter how well you scuff the surface. They do make bonding agents to add to the poly when this arises but even then they sometimes do not work all that well.

FWIW I prefer to use 120 grit sticky paper strips as opposed to screening because is leaves less marks.

Shoe polish, No. If you wax it once the only way you can "clean it up" is to rewax..Nothng will stick to wax but wax. Screen and recoat is good. I just did a 7 bdrm mini mansion yest and today.

Re: Freshin Up Some Hardwood??

If it is a poly finish and she does not want to sand and recoat, Boni makes a chemical called Refresh. I cleaned an approximately 6 yr old house with black oak floors, the result was remarkable.

Make sure to throughly clean the floors.

If 99.9% of the cleaners sold in stores were used to clean it (Murphy's Oil Soap, Mop N Glow..... etc....) the Refresh may not adhere to the floors. Then your only solution is to sand and re-poly.

If she does this make sure she knows how to clean wood floors in the future. 99.9% of the people (that I have had association with) ruin their floors, not to mention voids the warranty, on their floors within a week of moving in.
