Floating Or Glued?
I have a prospective client that wants to put pre-finished solid oak over a concrete slab. The product they selected is 5/8" thick and measures 3" wide. The strips are grooved on the bottom to accept locking clips. What method would you recommend for installation. I was thinking a floating install but want to make sure that we don't get a hollow sound. What underlaymnet would help deaden the sound and provide a vapor barrier? The supplier, Floor n Decor, has a couple of products -- the first is like a felt with a thin poly sheet on top and is called "Silent Stride"; the second is more like a rubber foam mat and is called "Sound Solution" We are located in Atlanata area so humidity is a consideration. Appreciate any guidance you guys can provide?

Re: Floating Or Glued?
Hi,
I'll tell you what I always do when I come across a new product. I go to their web-site and look for their own installation instructions. Then, I call their tech office to ask questions that may not have been covered in their written instructions. Then, after all that, if I want to deviate from those written instructions I ask myself, "Am I willing to warranty this installation?". Well, that's it. That's my secret. Not sure about the sound proofing, but I'm sure the manufacturer will have some suggestions for you. Bottom line is anything you do contrary to those written instructions voids the warranty.

Re: Floating Or Glued?
Sound solution is a good product to float over. Their warranty is iron clad. I am assuming you are talking about Junkers. That is the only one I know of with the clip doo-dads. By floating and using Sound Solution (do NOT use that other crap) you trump any moisture issues provided you run it up the walls a little.
Is this below grade? If so, you probably cant go with a solid. I work the Atlanta area myself and I am quite familiar with the wide swings in EMC we get around here. |

Re: Floating Or Glued?
Float over a vapor barrier.
If you glue down, bostic's best is the only I have heard of that would warranty. But I still would not do it. I would rather use cork underlay and float over it. Best to check with manufacturer on this.
