If it's a wood substrate, TCA explains that a backerboard underlayment is called for.
And yes, thinset underneath the backerboard then screw off to manufacturers specifications.

The term "underlayment" can be interpreted many ways.

When I here underlayment, I'm thinking of a wood panel.(there is one wood underlayment manufacturer, that markets their wood panels to be used under c-tile and stone.)

Over plywood, it is recommended a mud bed, cement panel, or uncoupling membrane(Ditra) be used. Although, there are Mortars made that market their ability to go directly over plywood.

Taser, I'm sitting here following you around and reading all of your posts. In one of your earlier ones you claim to be a tile guy. Why on earth are you asking these questions if your a "tile guy"? I've seen you bother Dougchips to the point of ignoring you. I've seen Ed the Roofer shut down your thread. Seriously, buddy, this forum is for pro's, not for newbies. It's not fair to try to pry insider info out of people. You have to earn your stripes like the rest of us.
