The Do's And Don'ts Of Thin Set?
For years I've been useing thin set as a bedding in smaller areas. I've never had a problem or a call back over leaking or broken grout......nothing........I even built a tile hot tub in my own home useing this method. Now out of nowhere another contractor puts a bird right up a customers a$$ along the lines of improper installation.
Called the manufacturer and can't get tech assistance on the phone, customer says she talked to them, and she did talk to sombody, I was standing right there, and the said manufacturer says improper install. Input fellas? I'm dieing over here. Bob

Bob, please describe your version of 'bedding'. If you are correct, there are a number of sites that will back you up.

Re: The Do's And Don'ts Of Thin Set?
The set is Custom Blend made by Building Products Inc
The tile is a 12 inch mosaic on mesh The bedding is about an inch and a 8th deep at the deepest point. It's there to slope out the drain on the shower floor. Bob

Re: The Do's And Don'ts Of Thin Set?
In my opinion I would have to agree that is far beyond the capacity of thinset. I think of thinset as a bonding medium, really not a substance for building up. Personally I would be using deck mud for that application or any application where the thinset was going to be over 1/2 thick.
