What is the current labor rate for install? Not much prep work, about 400 s/f , Chicago market

In my area (Fort Collins, Colorado), my subs are billing me $8.25 to $9.25 a square yard for commercial vinyl installation. That does not include tear outs, underlayments, fridge/stove R&R, prep, base board R&R, coving, heat welding or stool R&R. Hope this helps.

Here in New England I can pretty much get 10 to 20 a sq yd. That includes up to an hour of prep work, anything more is billed at 50 an hour.

On the higher end because its a smaller job.

I have not seen the job, to give you a firm rate, at which I will make a wage and my company will make a profit after all the overhead expenses are paid.

My brother was bidding on a simple Saturnia install job for me. Since it's been awhile since he did that kind of install (BTW- he's one of the best stone installers around- just ask some of the pro golfers or walk into the elevator lobbies of "Voyager of the Seas"), he asked me what the going rate is.

I told him that there's no going rate - he has to determine what the job is worth to him.

Tell you what guys, time to police the ranks.
I was never one to put price first. (Working with my uncle when I was a pup disabused me of that notion)
I have gone by reputation, longevity, etc.
The last time, and I do mean the final time ever, I gave a customer a recommendation it was one of the oldest highest profile outfits in town. Done business with them for years.
Sent the HO in with the drawing for the job, with exact as built dimensions marked as such on the drawing.
Long /short, wouldn't accept my numbers, had to send their expert to do a measure, he was no show first appointment, late second time, completely mis-measured everything, ignored what I told him about width of goods required(and customer had passed along at his first meeting at the showroom).
Sent ALL wrong size goods the first time for install, next day installers cut the sheet goods with an axe (don't know how you could get that rough even with a flint knife), managed to cut 12' goods so short that I had to make an over-sized transition for the door (required 6-0¾).
They started with a frigging sterile Baltic birch underlayed floor, and managed to leave some kind of crap under the goods---and I had to get my roller to finish sticking it!
Altogether 3 wasted days for me (not counting the wait to accommodate their scheduling), treated like an idiot throughout, getting a crappy job with nice goods, and paying top dollar---could have just gone to Blowes Pros or thrown a dart at the damn phone book and come out the same.
