Ceramic Floor Tile Grouting
I notice that the floor tile grouting used by my general contractor seems slightly rough textured and I am afraid ir will gather dirt.
The contractor is about to lay a large area of ceramic floor tiling in my living areas - can someone suggest a smoother textured grout suitable for living areas? In the UK we don't often use ceramic tiles in living area, more accustomed to carpeting. I would appreciate advice in this area. |

Re: Ceramic Floor Tile Grouting
What size are the grout lines? Usually floor tile (at least in the U.S.) are layed with 1/4" - 3/8" spaces. Anything over 3/16" gets sanded grout, which looks and feels kind of gritty. I'm assuming this is what you are seeing/feeling. It won't be 100% smooth after it's installed, but I've never had, or heard of anyone else having, problems with it collecting dirt after it's sealed a couple times with a good sealer.

Re: Ceramic Floor Tile Grouting
there are unsanded and sanded grouts
generally, only wall tile (and some forms of stone tile) are grouted with unsanded your floor tile will be fine with sanded grout wait 3 days after grouting for grout to fully cure and then seal with a quality sealer The sealer will help repel dirt and prevent staining good luck with your project

Another option is epoxy grout, less gritty. Also it won't stain or need to be sealed and re-sealed. Will cost more money though.

Re: Ceramic Floor Tile Grouting
Thank you for those kind replies. The gap will be around 3/16" so maybe yhey will want to put in a sanded grout. The epoxy sound interesting, but it is for 110 sq yds so maybe it would be too expensive. When the grout is sealed, is it just applied to the lines of grout?

Re: Ceramic Floor Tile Grouting
Most ceramic tile is glazed and does not need sealing, however, some do. For almost 1000 square feet my charge for epoxy would be around $1500 more than regular grout.

Re: Ceramic Floor Tile Grouting
I changed it to square yards because someone mentioned a gap of 3/16" - in the UK we work on metres, but I assumed my responder was working in feet!

Re: Ceramic Floor Tile Grouting I agree with the above replies. It's going to be a textured grout if it's sanded, but make sure you seal it. This will help guard against stains, etc. Aqua Mix makes a product called a "same day grout sealer" that can be applied over the grout after a few hours of it curing. My installers use it all the time, and it works great. It comes in an Aerosol can, so it makes it easier to apply.
Most tile vendors sell it, or something comparable. I'm pretty sure Lowe's carries something like it as well.

Re: Ceramic Floor Tile Grouting
If you do go with epoxy, I'd go with Spectralock Pro. It is all "sanded" but of a much finer texture than a normal sanded grout. It is also easier to work with and clean up than a normal epoxy grout, especially the newer "pro" formulation.
