Ceramic Demo

I have a home owner that wants new ceramic floors put in. I need to do the demo so my tile guy can get in there. What is the best way to demo these floors? It's 12 inch ceramic on cement board but there is no thinset between the cement board and 3/4" subfloor. I was thinking about buying a bosch demo hammer or similar. I also saw an air chisel on a longer handle that is suppose to work? There is also a laundry room/half bath with ceramic on concrete that needs to come up. What is the best way to get the concrete ready for the new floor? Please help in buying a new tool! Thanks

Re: Ceramic Demo

For the part over the ply, if there is no thinset, WHICH THERE SHOULD BE, it will come up extremely easily. Just get a bar or a scraper under the backer and it will come up in large pcs. Well it has for me on about 2 or 3 occasions. For the tile over concrete a small rotary hammer works best for us. A big demo hammer is way to oaffy and you can’t get up and under the tile to peel them away. It only causes more damage than actual removal of the tile.

Re: Ceramic Demo

Thanks for the reply. There isn't any thinset under the backer and my floor guy said that is the main reason the floor cracked and is getting replaced. By small rotary hammer what size do you mean? Any recomendations on a particular size or model you would recomend? thanks again

I have a Bosch SDS hammer drill/jack hammer.

Look for the paddle bit attachment.

Re: Ceramic Demo

I use a Bosch as well. How the CBU is actually attached will make a difference in how easy it comes up......hope for roofing nails instead of screws. Seeing as how there is no thinset under it, you never know, you might find Liquid Nail :

Re: Ceramic Demo

Thanks guys. You know what model bosch you use? I was reading some reviews on a bosch for 300 bucks and they weren't that good for chipping. I'll hope it wasn't the guy that using liquid nails that installed this. Maybe if it was we could revisit that thread!

Re: Ceramic Demo

You can also buy a $29 air impact hammer and hook it up to your compressor with the chisel bit. 99% of the time it's way more than enough, with the benefits of its light, and you can get it at almost any angle you want which is not as easy with a big rotary hammer. We have every tool made and the cheap little air hammer is usually the one that we reach for in this situation.

Re: Ceramic Demo

I just did a bathroom that had a 4'' mud bath on it the bosch workt perfect for me. I've done cement board over ply and some times it's esay and some times is because of the screws that are every 5''. I just use a 42'' roughneck gorilla bar it has the right angle with out the arm throw they work best for me on ply good look.

Re: Ceramic Demo

I've used a rotary hammer (Bosch Bulldog or Metabo) for some that was set and on others just a roofing stripper (the type with the blade). If it's not glued and screwed I would think some type of prybar or stripper would be much faster than the hammer method.

11316EVS.... when it's needed. It's not needed here. Using either a pry bar or 3-4' long crowbar, that floor should come right up.
