Carpet Water Damage

If someone had some minor flooding - and I know a lot of people who just did - Is it enough to use a shop vac to remove all possible water, and use a fan ?

All my research states to pull up the carpeting to dry the padding properly (or replace the padding).

Eight inches of rain !!

Re: Carpet Water Damage

It depends on the quality of the carpet and padding, low quality you might get away with a shop vac, but high quality (it is thicker, retains more water) pull the carpet and padding at least back to allow the air to get under the padding, and also consider the sub floor (wood or concrete). After it is good and dry clean it with a Rug Doctor (much cheaper than a pro, $30 or so including solution and does as good or better job) Remember outdoor flood waters coming inside bring dirt, and everything else from outside. p.s. Buy the carpet cleaning solution from H D or Lowe's, not the rug doctor brand, it works as good or better and is much less expensive.

Where are you from? I'm in the Upstate Ny area and our area got hit pretty hard. We have had ground water in our basement 6 times in 25 years, same carpet. We have always used a few shop vacs, a few large fans. Go to your janitorial supply company and ask them which chemical you need for the mildew ( I forget the name ). We finally ripped the carpet out this last heavy rain in July.

Good luck,

Re: Carpet Water Damage

I have come across some floors that have had minor flooding. Some people pull them and some don't. You may get some mold growing in there. I would say pull it so you have no chance in letting mold grow in your house.
