To Buy Or Not To Buy

I've been thinking about buying one of those new gilotine laminate cutter, anyone know if they're any good? How long does the blade last.

I'm curious too. I was also wondering if it might not do double duty as a light sheet metal shear.

Re: To Buy Or Not To Buy

I own the Mini Magnum Shear (13" wide model) Awesome tool!! Worth every penny, if you install on a regular basis. Cuts direct presure laminates like buttah...high pressure, a little more difficult. Will also cut thin (3/8" or less) engineered wood. Bullett is supposedly coming out with a blade that will cut solid 3/4 This tool will save a tremendous amount of time and energy....totally dustless, and you are able to set up and make cuts right where you are working. It also cuts VCT, LVT, DuraCeramic and composite tiles, carpet tiles, etc. I am averaging about 3500sf of installed material per blade with laminates being the predominate material bieng cut. I imagine it would last considerably longer on other, less dense material.
The blades for my particular unit run about $70.00, so overall I feel like its a worth while trade off (.02 a sf cost) considering it easily saves 1/2 a day on 1000sf+ jobs. Long story short, I highly recommend it....one of the most used tools in my arsenal.

Taurus, is this the tool you were refering too?

http://www.tools4flooring.com/crain-...ter-p-816.html

That is a purpose built laminate cutter....good price and you don't have to worry about changing blades. It only cuts laminate however......if all I did was laminate that would be great, but I need the versatility that the Magnum Shear delivers.

Looks sorta like my old, what I use to call, paper cutter but with a miter. It works with VCT? I gotta get one.. just because. Last one I had the blades lasted a good 100k square, after that a little heat and it lasted another 20k

Yes, the Crain 585 is exactly the one. I haven't heard of yours, which doesn't surprise me, being Canadian, we always have to wait for new technology. Now you have me interested. Where could I find some info on it Precision?

Re: To Buy Or Not To Buy

I think my link is to the Bullet site. They make the Magnum. There is more than one model. My link is to the X20, 20" blade, I think Precision has the X13, 13" blade.

If I misread that, and you're looking for the Crain, here is the link.

Hope that helps.

Re: To Buy Or Not To Buy

I use a bullet laminate and wood cutter; it's been over two years since owning this tool. Worth every penny and I would have spent more. However with the price tag that it was I sure wish it came with a back rubber for the end of the day. Never the less it has saved me so much money in saw blades not to mention labor hours, I can hardly believe it. Just this week the blade broke, no problem I'll just order a new one. Mine cuts up to 3/4-inch wood, laminate and VCT. Invaluable, get one and you'll see it makes you money.

What are the power requirements for this ? 220v or 110 ?
