Better Way To Tack

Ok,

Today was horrible. Have to coat about 2000sq/ft, 38 stairs and 2 landings, and be done by tomorrow. Buffed it last night, came back today, stated vacing and tacking. Started putting the finish on, and jesus, tons of crap in the finish. I preped extra hard so this would not happen.

I've tacked w/ water, mineral spirits, swiffer pads... does anything work better? I don't know what else to do other than buy a gas powered vac. Anyone have any tips or secrets?

Sounds to me like you're getting something from another source. Are the windows open? Did you sand? Did you wipe the walls after sanding? Are there animals involved? Are the HO's living in? You have obviously overlooked something.

I did the sanding job, then sanding sealer. Buff, then vac. Window are shut, and the ac/heat is not blowing.

I am starting to think it was the walls. I did have some dust collection problems (hole in the drum sander bag) during sanding. Never really thought of that, so i'll give it a shot. Thanks

Dust does like walls, I don't know why. Static? You also create a breeze just by moving around. Dad taught me about all of this and it is embedded so deeply that I just do it without thinking.

The hole in the sander bag is a big tipoff, you may want to do the ceilings too. Start at the top and work down.

Wish that I had a tip for dealing with the bugs. Anyplace, anytime, any job, at least ONE will get stuck. LOL

make sure the air is off in the house. Make sure its not bubbles in the finish, and make sure your lambswool is not coming apart. YOu can also strain your finish with an old screen. I always wipe the steps down with a rag damp with some thinner.

I'm wondering what kind of finish too. No mineral spirits under water....I never had any problem with dust on walls as long as I didn't touch them and all the air movement is stopped. Strain the finish. i vaguely remember hearing about someting similar happening with oil base. Some other forum tho...
