Don't make a bad cut.

Carpet is like any other fabric. I don't lay for a living but have done my own homes many times. What I do is lay the carpet out in the room. If I can find a nice straight wall to start with I use it. Then go to the opposite wall peal back the carpet and fold it over tight to the wall and place marks down the length. Connect the dots kinda thing. Then cut along the line. I don't stretch them as I don't have the technique or the tools. I have had minimal problems due to the fact I don't stretch. But of course stretching is the way it is suppose to be done. If tack less is in place use it if not you can add it.

I would suggest you find someone locally to do it for you. Berber is the most difficult to install and easy to botch. It should be stretched in if you want a long life from it. I've been installing carpets for over 30yrs.

I agree, get a pro to do it for you. You can empty out all the furniture & do all of the tearout to save some dough. Provided all of that were done ahead of time I imagine you could get out for less than three hundred bucks (even less, if you know the guy ) It would be money well spent, I assure you.
