Another laminate question.

I'm planning having some laminate done and have very little experience other than I've seen it done. The inexpensive stuff seems fine for my purpose but I want to do a stair landing and have some questions.

1)The thin laminate would work fine for the existing rise I have if I can put it down without pad. I would probably prefer to have it glued if at all possible?

2) Is this type of product going to be able to handle heavy move in move out traffic, particularly appliance dolly traffic??

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. RT.

Yes you glue it down without pad.

it will hold up o.k. for stairs.
Just like any other product, a more commercial rated lam would do better.

Laminate SUCKS on stairs! If you only have 1 stair you will be ok but anymore than 1 it is not worth it. Let us know what you decide to use! Interested in feedback and price paid etc...if you dont mind!
Thanks

I have quite a few customers that would beg to differ with you on that statement. Like anything else, it all boils down to expectations, education, and installation. I have done quite a few full staircases (13 steps or more) in laminate and have yet to have a complaint. Please educate me as to why your opinion is what it is.

In really short runs, like treads and risers, what is the difference between it an wood? Personally, I'd nix the wood.

I went to The Depot and they don't seem to have any info on gluing down laminate. Should they have that information there or should I be looking elsewhere??

We have a covered porch with painted t&g fir about 80 years old in reasonably good condition. Mamma wold like laminate on that also. I might get some blowing snow or rain a couple times a year but it is generally dry. Would this porch be a good candidate for glue down laminate and could it maybe last at least half as long as the painted fir??

Any responses are appreciated. Rob..

The only application for gluing down laminate is on steps. Blowing rain, and snow a couple of times a year is a no go for laminate flooring. The stuff is basically HDF with a plastic surface layer. Water and HDF together = swollen expanded pile of wasted money. I cannot think of any wood flooring product that wil live in that environment. You might be better off to sand and recoat the fir but that's out of my area of expertise.

Bummer. Seems like my entry way would get more snow and slop than my covered porch so I guess I'll have to rethink the entry. Sure would look nice on that covered porch.
