83 Year Old Hardwood Flooring
Question- I am getting ready to do complete interior remodel. Great 83 yr old hardwood flooring. Customer wants ceramic. Is it worth my time to take it out for resale or cover it. About 1100 sf.

Re: 83 Year Old Hardwood Flooring
Are they willing to tear it out, knowing that it will cost more money?
How thick is it?

Re: 83 Year Old Hardwood Flooring
Its hard to give you a random price of what it is worth. But I would tear it out, if they are willing to pay. You can find someone to buy it!
How much sf are we talking about?

Re: 83 Year Old Hardwood Flooring
Do it...I wouldn't pass that up for anything. If you're making decent wage tearing it out anyway, why not? A good chunk of people see that as priceless.
If it's in good shape, you can sell it online somewhere. I heard a story at the cabinet shop the other day about guys buying up the scrap trim cart and selling it online for outrageous money in Europe. Some work, but it will pay off. Mark |

Reclaimed red or white oak can go for anywhere between $7 to $10 per sf. If it's chestnut could be worth $20.

Re: 83 Year Old Hardwood Flooring
If it was installed anything like mine was ( 3 inch nail every 6 to 8 inches) you are going to have a deal of a time pulling it up.

Re: 83 Year Old Hardwood Flooring
If it comes up fairly easily i would take it up,I try to keep a few pieces of old wood for patching jobs. For example ,If i take down a wall and put a flush beam in,the old wood matches a lot better trhan new wood after a sand and finish.I think it also makes for a better tile job to not go over the hardwood. Also becareful,if you rip it up, Some houses of that era have wood floors nailed direcly to the joists with no subfloor

Re: 83 Year Old Hardwood Flooring
Take it up! It may be a pain to take the nails out but well worth it if the boards are a good thickness. Whatever it is it's old world (I think)and will be a good reclaim. Stick it on craigslist or one of the reclaimed wood sites. Sand it down if you have the right setup and get a better return.

Re: 83 Year Old Hardwood Flooring
I'm crying at the thought of all the old hardwood I've ripped up and threw away over the years. I bet it was worth a small fortune lol. I didn't realize there was a big market for this.
PS. I just ripped up 800 sf of 130 year old 1"thick "1-3/4 black mahogany strips 3 weeks ago. Last edited by lawndart; 03-06-2008 at 01:39 PM. |

Re: 83 Year Old Hardwood Flooring
You would probably get the bets price selling it outright, though you would have to advertise it and it may take awhile to find the right buyer.
There are also yards that specialize in reclaimed lumber that may give you a fraction of it's actual value.
