45 Degree Frame In Hardwood Floors

I have laid hardwood but never tackled the forty five degree "frame" on the perimeter of the floor. What are the most difficult situations in creating the "frame" and what are things I need to keep in mind to complete this look?

Re: 45 Degree Frame In Hardwood Floors

1) Square the room. Check the square of your project often. If you end up out of square when you switch to the standard pattern, you will end up with a terrible looking job.
2) Use the longest (and straightest) pieces in the frame.
3) I like the Paslode finish nailer for the first few rows of the frame. (in the tounge of course). It nails tight without moving the wood.
4) It's time consuming. Very Very time consuming. The last one I did was a 16 x 24 room. The frame was 3 feet out from the walls. The project took 2 full days.
5) Good luck and don't try to price it as production work. Once you do one, it becomes addictive.

You could lay the field first, then cut for the border, then lay your border around your field. That way you will stay fairly square. You still have to lay everything out, especially your starting and endin rows.
