Having installed for 35 years, I guarantee you that all the big boxes mark up carpet and pad to cover the labor. Don't forget some carpets can be bought in different grades. Compare the sample to what you get. I have seen them install cheaper than what you saw in the store. It just looks the same to the homeowner.

And now it's 99.00. They dropped the price 100.00. My wife and I have been looking at fixer-upper homes, and the owner of one house we went to look at was so proud that he'd found this deal.

most of the installers have contracts with several lowes and hd stores. then they hire sub subs that do have to pass the back round checks and carry the insurance, but they do not have to have any skill. in fact if you did or do have skill you wouldn't accept the pay which is half what lowes or hd is paying the original sub. then you have to deal with a total of 4 phone calls if you want to cut a door that wasn't billed or any thing the half wit sales person or estimator forgot to tell the homeowner about.
with the 199.00 deal have you ever seen the markup on carpet? i can tell you i will do the install for free and still make money on any job.

It's kind of like a bump Bud.
It's applicable because it's still going on.
We are competing with free pad and install......the margins are still good enough to do the job justice.

Had one of those calls today.

"I bought some carpet at Blowe's and we are on a tight time line. Blowe's can't install it for 2 weeks. Can you get it in your schedule for next week sometime. It is only 4 bedrooms and a master closet. 80x15 roll. I shoot them a ball park price not including the take up and disposal of the old and they say, well Blowe's only wanted $139 to install it"

"I can do that, if I sell you the carpet and cushion, but not on labor alone"

"How can that be, what's the difference"

I explain the mark-up game. I explained that he already bought the installation and then some, from Blowe's when he bought the carpet, they just want a $139 scheduling fee to add to the profits, and continue to explain mark up and margins and how I could meet or beat Blowe's if I sold them the carpet and cushion.
They already bought the carpet and now they were on the search for that $139, guy.

The general public has no common sense. Some people never figure out that you get nothing free.

I have a friend who was an install manager at Lowes in the state of Oregon. Heres the scoop! Lowes and HD both will rename the mills and type of product making it almost impossable to track what you have paid for. As far as carpet goes typically the HO goes in to get this great deal not knowing that they have just paid about $20.00 above the MSRP. ie. HO goes in sees a carpet for $22.95 per syd. install rates full house $199.00 the carpet they were just sold cost Big Store about $4.50 per syd They are still making their money and still being able to afford to pay their installers good money because of this mark-up. Speaking of mark-up, has anyone seen the pricing of their Pad lately OUTRAGEOUS considering the typical pad 6-8# 1/2 in goes for about $80-$100.00 per roll. Good luck with that eventually the HO will get these gimiks figured out.
