Will Green Keep You Out of the Red?

There is an underserviced niche in my market area that has proven to be very lucrative to me. While I am very sure it is different from area to area and in different regions across the country, here in Western New York the whole push to the Green movement and environmental friendliness was slow to really catch on and while it has begun to get real traction with consumers other contractors have not really embraced it yet which has allowed us to pick up a lot of very low competition work.

Obviously energy efficient energy star windows and doors and insulation are always in demand and the tax incentives make customers ask about these things when discussing home remodels and upgrades. That is only part of the green or eco conscience mind though and many will say is more common sense than environmentally conscious. Where we have done well is on the more direct push toward the environmental minded consumers on things like solar water heater installations and limited solar installations for garages and workshops.

The actual work is relatively simple with easy to follow guidelines on installation available from New York State to make sure the customer qualifies for the tax credits but despite how simple these installations really are very few contractors do them. More importantly, they seem like they should be complicated or expensive to the customer as well so you can make a very good profit on these installations. In some areas across the US, and particularly in other countries with more stringent environmental regulations, entire companies subsist on nothing but ecofriendly home improvements.

While I suspect on the west coast here in the US there is a lot of competition in this area, in my area it was an untapped market with a lot of demand. Simple installations can be done in a day easily by 2 people in my crew giving lots of high margin work readily available and on short notice to keep the crews productive if there is a delay on bigger project. If you have never looked at doing the solar panel installations and your equipment or skill area is in anyway relevant, it might be worth your time to look into as a high profit side specialty.
