Hi Folks.

One of the most important things to consider when building a website is,will you be able to compete efficiently for that keyword in order to get on the first page of the search engines. If you're not on the first page...you won't be seen and all that work is for nothing.

Try to pick a domain that has the keywords  in the domain name. For instance: TileContractorInHonolulu, RemodelExpertInDenver,PhoenixSidingContractors etc.. Try to get the .com .org or the .net. I take the .org over .net always if the .com is gone.

I'll define four grades, corresponding to four levels of effort necessary to rank in a specific niche or keyword selection.

EASY: The top ten results have an average PR of less than 1.0, none of the top five results
has more than 500 backlinks, and none of the top five results has a PR 2 or more. Ignore the
PR of any pages on a rank magnet site like squidoo, amazon, ezinearticles, etc. None of the
top five results is on a domain with an exact match for the keyword.

DOABLE: The top ten results have an average PR of 1.0 – 1.5, none of the top five results has
more than 800 backlinks, and none of the top five results has a PR of 3 or more. Ignore the PR
of any pages on a rank magnet site like squidoo, amazon, ezinearticles, etc. At most one of the
top five results is on a domain with an exact match for the keyword.

DIFFICULT: The top ten results have an average PR of 1.5-3.0, none of the top five results has
more than 1000 backlinks, and none of the top five results has a PR of 4 or more. Ignore the
PR of any pages on a rank magnet site like squidoo, amazon, ezinearticles, etc. Two or more
of the top five results are pages on domains with an exact match for the keyword.

IMPOSSIBLE: The top ten results have an average PR of over 3.0, some of the top five results
have more than 1200 backlinks, and some of the top five results have a PR of 4 or more.
Ignore the PR of any pages on a rank magnet site like squidoo, amazon, ezinearticles, etc.
Two or more of the top five results are pages on domains with an exact match for the keyword.
A niche or keyword is assigned to the highest grade matching at least one of the criteria above.

Use Firefox to get data you need. Download it from here: http://www.mozilla.com/enUS/

firefox/SEO For Firefox: This is a free (after signup) plugin for Firefox, explained here: http://tools.seobook.com/firefox/seo-for-firefox.html
– install and follow the instructions on
the page to configure.
When you install SEO For Firefox, you should activate the plugin.

You'll need hosting(cheap plans available) and then use the Wordpress platform. Wordpress.com and blogger.com(you can find this under account settings in your gMail account if you have one) are free site building platforms where you don't need hosting. For some reason Google loves WP. Now write a minimum of 3 unique and original posts that are keyword rich(but don't overdo it). Make sure the keyword is in the title, opening sentence and last sentence. Then sprinkle your keywords throughout the article.

Time to promote your site and build Authority backlinks. I always write 3 different articles on the same topic using my keywords. Use the same format I explained earlier. I submit the articles to Hubpages, ezinearticles and squidoo. You're allowed 2 anchor texts per article so I point one to my site and one pointing to the other article. Ezinearticles is alittle different because they have a resaource box. That's the only place you can promote yourself.

This is a quick and effective way to rank. I ranked on 10 different Contractor sites in 2 days using this strategy.

Google "contractor portland oregon" or "contractor honolulu" to see. I purchased the domain names with those specific keywords.

I learned this stuff the hard way and I have some really cool tools to help me make this alot quicker.

There is some hard work involved in the beginning but it is worth it in order to rank effectively and start getting traffic and hopefully some customers..

I hope this helps.

Here are some quotes directly from Google on Ranking and being visible in there organic pages:

“Webmasters who spend their energies upholding the spirit of the basic principles will provide a much better user experience and subsequently enjoy better ranking than those who spend their time looking for loopholes they can exploit.”

"To organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful."(Auto blogging will work temporarily,so don't use this tactic)

“Our advice for webmasters is to focus on creating high quality sites that create a good user experience and employ white hat SEO methods instead of engaging in aggressive webspam tactics.”

“Some webmasters engage in link exchange schemes and build partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking, disregarding the quality of the links, the sources, and the long-term impact it will have on their sites. This is in violation of Google's Webmaster Guidelines and can negatively impact your site's ranking in search results.”

“Examples of link schemes can include: -Links intended to manipulate PageRank -Links to web spammers or bad neighborhoods on the web -Excessive reciprocal links or excessive link exchanging ("Link to me and I'll link to you.") -Buying or selling links that pass PageRank”

“The best way to get other sites to create relevant links to yours is to create unique, relevant content that can quickly gain popularity in the Internet community. The more useful content you have, the greater the chancessomeone else will find that content valuable to their readers and link to it. Before making any single decision, you should ask yourself the question: Is thisgoing to be beneficial for my page's visitors?”

“Users know good content when they see it and will likely want to direct other users to it. This could be through blog posts, social media services, email, forums, or other means. Organic or word-of-mouth buzz is what helps build your site's reputation with both users and Google, and it rarely comes without quality content.”

Hey there Mike. Hasn't that all been hashed over in the forum a million times already. I'm now sorry that I wrote about this.I've racked my brain and spent hundreds of hours learning this stuff so that I could compete for some exposure. These are tips that would help any one of the guys here. It certainly helped me. I'll drop the subject and delete this post. All you guys have to do is tell me it's garbage.

    Johnny,Great Blog.
You are spot on about picking your fight in regards to keywords. It would take you about a year or more to get to the top of google with a keyword such as "Builder" but if you geo tag(place specific) it or drill more down in to the niche such as "Chino Hills Builder" or "Eco Builder" you will rank faster with less competition. Thus boosting traffic.

You are missing the best tool of all time and it's free. Google Keyword Tool. This gives great info you need to know about search volumes, other keyword to shoot for etc.

I have launched and rank many sites purely on great on page seo and picking the right keyword with little or no competition.

Of course if you want to stay in no 1 position you have to back link and build your web real estate. Got to make it hard for your competition to knock you off.

Hope this adds to your post.

This information has definitely been discussed. Which is why I am amazed more people are not taking advantage. This really is the best way for your site to rank.

Thank You Tony. You know..I didn't put the Google keyword tool because I was hoping someone would mention it. I used it earlier on but went to some paid tools that gave me more precise data. A guy and his tools, ay! Anyways..Thank You for the comment. It's a great addition.

Thank You Sir Mixalot. I appreciate your support. My wife and I have struggled over the past 2 years to really make these things work. We're pretty damn good at it now and all I want to do is help the guys that want their own site. Most people give up because their sites will never rank or if they do, the ranking can be lost in a heartbeat. You Rock Sir.

Thank You for your comment Kcbasements. It doesn't take years to rank your website. You can teach an old dog new tricks. Learning this stuff at 55 wasn't easy. You get fed so much crap. Buy this...buy that..I know this..I know that.
The article marketing, press releases and some darn effective youtube marketing can sen a flood of traffic to your site. That's how word of mouth starts. Getting yourself out there. Thanks for your comment Budz. Much appreciated.

Hey man, I was just saying because you are new. I'm sorry if that sounded bad that wasn't my intent. After reading what I wrote I can see where that didn't sound to good...sorry about that.

I'm happy you wrote it, please write more. Once you get to know me you will realize I love stimulating discussion. I'm still learning the website world so this is all good information.

Again, sorry if that sounded rash.

Hey there Mike. I am new to this forum, but not to the planet. No problem...it was kinda funny.
I'm not all that good at conversation sometimes. Depends on the mood. All good though.
I would send you links to the free sites I use but I'm not allowed yet. Articles, Press Releases, certain edu and.gov sites can give you powerful backlinks.
    I wouldn't bother with anything under a PR5.
I'll add Part2 to this blog soon. It'll be on writing a bullet proof article that will rank. I have almost 400,000 followers on twitter, so when I tweet a link, I get tons of response and traffic. It's a valuable tool I saw almost 2 years ago. Most people don't understand the future of Social Media. This forum is a powerful and growing form of social media.
Thanks for commenting back Mike. I appreciate it.

How did you get 400,000 twitter followers? You should do a blog post on that.

I have 6 different accounts. My main one johnnkowal has 112,000 followers. I started building them almost 2 years ago. I didn't really like Facebook all that much and only have 1300 there. Boy was I wrong. Should've started a fanpage back when noone really knew that it existed.

The biggest thing that has come out of social media(ie facebook and twitter). And is going to have a powerful impact on builders and contractors is the facebook "like" button and fan pages which lets people rate you on your website and rate you on your work on your facebook fanpage. Your customer can put there testimonials on there. More "likes" more reputation. This is mighty powerful. 500 million users cant be wrong.

You got that right Tony. Us ole fellers better get on the bandwagon. My websites bring leads from comments and questions submitted from different folks.
I'll have to look into the fan page thing. I let that one slip through my fingers a couple of years ago. We should be doing all that stuff here also. Following each other and hitting that "like" button. You never know what this forum will evolve into. I've already tweeted my blog and others that I like.

Kowality, good post..although I disagree about the PR stuff. PR is relevant mostly when you are trying to get a link, and mostly if it comes from a relevant site. Many sites in many spaces own the top 1-3 spots with PR 1(not "car insurance" or "personal injury", but certainly most things painting). Geo and social markers far outweigh PR.

  • Thumb_personal%20pic%201Author
    kowalityover 7 years ago

Thank You for the comment Seattle. Maybe...but without relevant backlinks(and lots of non-relevant) you won't have a solid position. Those sites are exactly the ones that I can knock out of position very easily and I have. It's the authority sites with 1000's of backlinks that are hard to beat. Try getting by a Hubpage, wiki, ezine, squidoo or any other site with a PR6 and above. You might as well forget about it. In fact, if the average for the top 10 is PR4, you have a hard road ahead of you. What do you mean by Geo and social markers? I think you mean social bookmarking, but I have never heard the term Geo used in SEO.
